I believe the creation of art for me is a multi-layered process. First is the act of setting pure intent. Second is seeing differently from the normal state. The shapes I see, whether in the plant world, a piece of metal, or in the face of a stranger, constantly amaze me. Third is becoming the conscious conduit for the creative spirit. I hold no claim to where this spirit resides, be it within myself or outside the realm of perception. The fourth, and sometimes most important piece is to remember that I live in a chaotic system. This allows for the work to “breathe” or to change with as little frustration on my part as possible. I primarily use two forms of metal, new steel, and old farm and industrial metal. I love the way that the old metal records its history. On heavily used material such as a plowshare you can see every rock it hit as it worked its way through the ground. Old industrial nuts from a granite shed show stresses and wrench marks. All the pieces I use have had thousands of hours of accumulated work. I believe I honor those who created and used these materials before me. The act of creation for pleasure is something we all do and share. It is something that is uniquely human. I encourage all to continuously, consciously create and emerge. - Martin Smith |
